Bangladesh looks to import 50, 000 tonnes rice

Bangladesh is seeking to import 50,000 tonnes of non-basmati parboiled rice, the Directorate-General of Food Bidders have until June 6 to submit offers, it said.

Philippines sees record dry season rice harvest

The Philippines' rice harvest in the current dry crop season may touch record high levels due to early rains in the first quarter, putting less pressure on the government to import more of the staple, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said recently. Manila said last month it expects to surpass its rice production forecast of 7.6 million tonnes in the first half, which covers the dry crop period. It estimates total production this year to reach a record 17.46 million tonnes, more than 10 percent higher than last year's output.
Global rice stocks forecast cut

The Philippines' National Food Authority (NFA) said it will award more rice import rights to private traders, taking cumulative allocations to nearly 500,000 tonnes out of a planned total of 600,000 tonnes for 2011.The revision, linked to the fast pace of exports in France, was 150,000 tonnes higher than FranceAgriMer's March estimate and nearly 30 percent above the volume exported in the 2009/2010 season.

Vietnam exported 1.85 million tonnes of rice in the first quarter of the year as per the Vietnam Food Association. The figure is higher than an estimate of 1.686 million tonnes. Rice export revenue in the January-March period totalled $884 million, the association said in a statement.
